Introduction

The CAN Breakfast Club

The CAN Breakfast Club was initiated by Maninho aka Shack in the Samora Machel Township, within the neighbouring Siqalo informal settlement.

Through building a network of sustainable partnerships, CAN is assisting Maninho in financing and sustaining the Breakfast Club initiative to help these very poor communities, through a very tough Covid-19 pandemic where so many people are out of work and find difficulty in feeding themselves or their children.

Our feeding program consists of an oatmeal breakfast. We are now looking for sponsors to help us in this mission and to increase the nutritional content of the breakfast by including: raisins for Vitamin C and natural sweetness, hemp seed oil to add vital amino acids to the porridge, potable water, a boiled egg (for protein), fresh fruit and bread for the children to take to school.

Project activities

Five ways the club changes lives

1. A bowl of Porridge a day

The project aims to make it simple and safe to access simple nutrition — securing sustainable partnerships with food outlets to serve a bowl of milk porridge a day, cooked and served from the Kwa Mulungu food outlets in both townships for the community's most vulnerable. We now wish to make the porridge even more beneficial by adding hemp oil for protein and amino acids, and currants / sultanas for sweetness and Vitamin C.

2. Hydration and a fruit a day

Project beneficiaries enjoy a fruit a day to help meet their daily nutritional requirements. Children will also be given water to help them hydrate.

3. Potable water for the day

Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right. The Breakfast Club uses this opportunity to distribute potable water supplied by sustainable partners — one small way CAN seeks to make it less carbon intensive through sustained community effort.

4. Music & Performance Art (CANBeats)

The CAN Beat (ex BlastBeat) programme has been approved and implemented by education departments on four continents — currently running several programs including a competition for song publishing deals, international exposure and funding support for young songwriters.

5. The Greening of Siqalo

The starting point of a whole new localised ecosystem that aims to bring hope, work, food, education, music, social capital, community engagement and joy to a whole community — introducing vertical farming of edible plants, fruit and nut trees, permaculture guerrilla gardening workshops, recycling and waste separation.
