Coffee that pays farmers for carbon
CAN is working with GHC on sequestering CO2 values and will soon be in a position to offer their farmers additional cash for the carbon values they sequester via the Climate Action App — adding a significant amount to the bottom line of GHC and their farmers.
CAN is exploring carbon sequestration projects including Coffee Tree growing and Industrial Hemp in Uganda. The mission is to develop a template for sustainable farming and living — to provide, feed and house people in viable carbon neutral/negative lifestyles. CAN is also championing Industrial Hemp under licence to produce Hemp Hurds for Hemp-Lime construction, food supplements and fibre.

Gorilla Highlands Coffee is based in the equatorial Kigezi Province of south west Uganda — high-quality Arabica beans grown at 1,500 to 2,500 meters among clear lakes, thickly forested islands and misted mountains: the perfect temperature and humidity for coffee with exquisite texture and flavor.

Grown around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park on the edge of the Rift Valley — one of Uganda's oldest, most biologically diverse rainforests, home to over 500 mountain gorillas.

CAN Goals in Uganda
The immediate plan
1. GHC Café & office in Kisoro
Funding and development of a Café / Restaurant and office for the Gorilla Highlands Coffee cooperative in Kisoro — started in 2020, progressing well, employing four people; now expanding to double its capacity.
2. A sustainable coffee industry
Systematic development of a sustainable Coffee Industry in Kisoro, South West Uganda — production, sales and marketing in Uganda and internationally.
3. Processing centre & COE
Building and equipping a processing centre in Kisoro as part of the Agri / Education / Eco-Tourist Centre of Excellence.
4. Industrial Hemp licences
Securing Hemp growing licences to research the CO2-sequestering Industrial Hemp industry in Uganda for building and food purposes — including building the walls of the first Coffee Production centre in SW Uganda.
5. Carbon R&D for farmers
Research and development of the carbon sequestration values of Coffee Trees and Forestry, and the selling of that Carbon to benefit the farmers and fund more tree planting.
Youth Ambassadors & Innovators
Bonita — Save Our Lakes, Save Our Future
This project protects the crater lakes of SW Uganda, seriously affected by soil erosion, sedimentation and effluent. A bamboo buffer intercropped with elephant grass will be established around the most affected lakes — rehabilitating ecosystems through bamboo's purification and filtration, boosting the fish industry (nutrition and income), increasing bird populations, and offering a high-value alternative to timber that reduces pressure on natural forests.
Monitoring and evaluation is participatory (farmers and their representatives) and collaborative (other organizations in the area). Education starts with primary school kids, who teach their families tree planting for a secure future.
IGIHOHO PROJECT by Bonita — producing "igihoho seed bags" made from biodegradable banana bark.
