About CANBeat
From Blastbeat to CANBeat
CANBeat is a life skills event climate action programme that is a fusion and upgrade of Blastbeat, an international award winning multi-disciplinarian project that ran across Asia, the United States, South Africa and Europe.
It succeeded and was run in hundreds of schools, universities and sports clubs in four continents with TV series commissioned and broadcast in Ireland and South Africa, sponsored by Mr. Price in SA, Coca Cola in Ireland, Barclays, O2 and the Big Lottery Fund in the UK and other local sponsors in each territory.
Today CANBeat's core mission is to raise awareness and create local projects about climate change, driving youth-led climate action social entrepreneurship and empowerment worldwide.

Simphiwe "Simmah" Mahlanyana — "Lil'Sim"
A talented cover artist from Marina Da Gama, Cape Town, whose career took off in 2013 — performing chart-topping covers in an acoustic story-telling style all across the country. During Covid lockdown he wrote several songs about love, life and surviving the pandemic. CAN media's Chad Cupido spoke to "Lil'Sim":
"Be free, live freely and ensure others are also free! Some of the music I have written speaks to how we can better ourselves as humans in order to do better for others and the environment."
On inspiration: an NPO called "Play Handball ZA" — a sport organisation that educates youth from underprivileged communities, teaching kids handball with environmental awareness workshops as part of the curriculum. "It's an absolutely brilliant organization."

Dj Tease — "Music speaks to the masses"
Meet CAN Beats Ambassador Malven Tegame, aka "Dj Tease" — sound engineer and in charge of event planning and DJing at CAN events:
"As a DJ I believe in using music as a tool to raise awareness about climate change… music speaks to the masses, especially in the townships, where music is part of day to day life. If they hear a beat, they literally listen to the message. It's an honor to work with CAN as they are ordinary people doing extraordinary things."
