About "Do It Like Greta"
A song born in Siqalo
Do It Like Greta is a song created by a group of young individuals from Siqalo, Cape Town. They were inspired by the courage and advocacy of Greta Thunberg, who took a stand and started a movement to mitigate the destruction of young people's futures due to the effects of climate change.
The song is part of the Climate Actions Now Songwriting Challenge. The backdrop of the music video depicts the realities of the most vulnerable and impoverished communities of South Africa, featuring ordinary people highlighting solutions to the effects of climate change and the social ills they face.
This project started with a songwriting challenge, but has led to the creation of a number of initiatives including the CAN Breakfast Club, the Greening of Siqalo and a recycling and community clean-up initiative — all featured in the music video.

Why Siqalo
Climate projections for southern Africa until 2050 suggest temperature increases by on average 2.1–2.7°C (Cairns et al. 2012), which will lead to a delay in the onset of the rainy seasons, increased heat stress and more extreme weather events — excessive rainfall and drought stress (Burke et al. 2009).
Siqalo — or IsiQalo, which means "the beginning" — is an informal settlement located within Mitchells Plain in South Africa. Established during the drought years, its wood and corrugated-iron structures are at constant risk from flooding, fires and airborne disease. The people here are very vulnerable to the effects of climate change — and together, they are taking action to make a difference in their community.
